THE DIABETES DAY

The Diabetes Day is commemorated each year on November 14 in honor of Frederick Banting, who was born that day in 1891. This physiologist, along with Charles Best, insulin was isolated in 1921. In 2005, WHO spent this day with the diabetic foot, and rested on the following facts:
- Every 30 seconds a leg is amputated due to diabetes somewhere in the world.
- Over 70% of all lower extremity amputations are performed in people with diabetes.
- In developed countries, more than 5% of people have problems related to diabetes.
- Problems with feet are the most frequent cause of hospitalization in diabetic individuals.
- In developing countries, it is estimated that foot problems associated with requiring more than 40% of available healthcare resources for diabetes.
- The direct cost of amputation because of diabetic foot ranges between $ 30 and $ 60.
- The majority of amputations are initiated by a foot ulcer.
- One in six people with diabetes has a foot ulcer during their lifetime. Each year 4 million people worldwide suffer from a sore foot.
- In most cases, foot ulcers and amputations can be prevented, to the point that over 85% of amputations could be avoided.
- Significant reductions in amputations could be achieved through effective control of diabetes, well trained and organized teams for the treatment of foot complications in diabetics, and good information about foot care.
World Diabetes Day

The World Diabetes Day is jointly sponsored by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the World Health Organization (WHO). His goal in 2004 was expressed in a concise and important health message: Fight the Obesity Prevention Diabetes

Obesity and type 2 diabetes are a threat to the health, welfare and economic prosperity of most of the world population. Overweight and obesity are major modifiable risk factors for type 2 diabetes.

The overall message of the IDF and WHO was simple: some lifestyle changes such as following a healthy diet and being physically active are effective in slowing and in many cases prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes and reduce the risk of complications in people with diabetes.
